In the noisy movie and film landscape - why should I care about “home free”?

Why is “Home Free” Important

Queerness, transness, deafness, mental health- these are all central themes of this story without really needing to be mentioned as such.

Queer people have entire lives before and after coming out. We need representation of those people LIVING their lives just as everyone else does.

Deaf people are often looked at as having a “disability” and frequently garner sympathy from those they meet when, in reality, Deaf Culture is a beautiful thing that many Deaf people are PROUD to be a part of.

Mental health is portrayed in media in such a way that the character experiencing it only really exhibits adverse side effects, and the character is never seen as more than their mental health. A LOT of mental health side effects are things that keep the person SAFE, and they do not define who the person is.

Lastly, many romances in the media focus on depicting a dependence on romantic love for the characters to feel whole. It is essential to show that one does not need a romantic relationship to be “okay” - especially after losing someone they love.

This kind of diverse and positive representation is more important than ever as we, as a society, learn, grow, and evolve.
